Overview:

MODERN LANGUAGES

The Modern Languages department offers French and German to National Qualification levels, and also teaches Spanish and Mandarin as part of the elective programme in S1 and S2. There is also the possibility of following the Modern Languages for Life and Work course from S3.

In lessons, we work on developing skills and confidence in the four areas of listening, reading, talking and writing.  In S1 to S3, we follow the Echo course in German and the Expo course in French and pupils also have access to online learning through ‘Linguascope’.  From S4 pupils practise their listening and grammar online using ‘This is Language’.

Languages are needed in many jobs and careers, and being able to speak another language is an added bonus when combined with other skills and qualifications.  Employers are keen to recruit global people, and being good at communication in another language is definitely a valuable asset.

Elgin High School is twinned with Hans-Leinberger Gymnasium in Landshut in Germany.  All pupils have the chance to take part in a regular exchange programme to Germany and to work on projects with our twin school in class.  In S5 and S6 pupils can visit Berlin and the Confucius project also offers Moray pupils in S4 and S5 the opportunity to travel to China on an immersion course.

The Modern Languages department also regularly organises cinema trips to see French and German films, and Advanced Higher students travel to Aberdeen University Library to help with their research.

What we teach

S1-S2: Pupils currently follow the Echo and Expo French and German course in S1 and S2, and also have the opportunity to study Mandarin and other languages in the Modern Languages Elective programme. At the end of S2 pupils can decide to take one or both languages for the final year of the BGE.

S3: S3: In S3 pupils spend 3 lessons per week on either French or German or six lessons per week on both. There is also the Languages for Life and Work course offered in S3, which results in a reward of SCQF points at the end of the year.

S4:In S4, pupils can take National 4 or National 5 in French or German. Pupils are given a This is Language profile, which allows them to practise vocabulary, grammar and listenings at home.

S5-S6: Following on from National 5, pupils can take a Higher and then an Advanced Higher in their chosen language. S5 and S6 pupils can also choose to take the National 5 or crash Higher in French or German if they have not continued with a language in S4.
